Akishino-Temari Hydrangea - trade gallon

$22.95
A favorite of ours, this small Japanese form is nearly a mophead even though it is a "mountain" hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata ’Akishino-Temari’) from the higher elevations in Japan. The blooms are pastel pink or blue on a smallish plant that is ideal for shady nooks. We have observed a second flush of blooms in the fall, which is an added bonus. Splendid plant offered by only a handful of nurseries in this country. 3’ x 3’ for zones 5-8.

Alabama Buckeye - 1 gallon
Alabama Buckeye - 1 gallon

$20.95
It came from Alabama with a buckeye on its knee. This must-have buckeye distinguishes itself by leafing out a few weeks later in spring, then giving tremendous bloom in summer & color in fall. It is also larger growing overall, making it a true standout within the species. (Grows to nearly 20 feet.) We raise Aesculus parviflora var. serotina from seed from our stand of ’Rogers’. According to current taxonomy, this is a true variety within the species of bottlebrush buckeye and as such breeds true. Sun or shade, spreads by suckering. Delightful when planted en masse where space allows. Deciduous. Zones 4 - 8.

In the fall this native, deciduous shrub puts on an eye-catching display of purple fruit clustered along the upright, arching branches. Full color occurs for us in October as the weather begins to cool. Once the leaves drop (which they do soon after the first frost) the bare stems continue to hold the deep purple berries into winter, or until local birds devour. Height to 6 feet & as wide. Easy to grow in sun or medium shade. Zones 6 - 10.

This is NOT the invasive exotic wisteria species that has escaped to smother much of the roadside throughout the south, competing with Lonicera japonica. Rather Wisteria frutescens ’Amethyst Falls’ is an American native species, a selection found in the northwest corner of SC and introduced by Head-Lee Nursery. It flowers as a very young plant with slightly fragrant blooms well after any chance of frost. Give it lots of sun. It usually reflowers in late spring. Vigorous but not invasive, deciduous, for sun in zones 5-9.

$24.00
A compact version of the native bigleaf magnolia, Magnolia macrophylla var. ashei becomes a shrub of size or even a small tree (15 feet or better) and blooms at an earlier age than the species. The leaves are wide & long, up to 2 feet in length, and catch any breeze that sails through your garden. While it might seem difficult to fit such a plant into your garden, we find that it blends remarkably well into even modest spaces. The big, broad leaves make a wonderful backdrop for busier foliage, whether coniferous or broadleaf. The upright creamy-white chalice-shaped flowers are inviting and delicately fragrant. Decidous. Zones 6 - 9.
